Northern Vermont has a small but diverse Jewish community. It includes both "flatlanders" and native Vermonter alike. Our Hebrew School is open to all and is constantly adjusting its offerings to address the needs and interests of our families.
Currently we offer classes for children ranging from Kindergarten to B’nai Mitzvah age. Our goal is to create a community environment where children can learn in a fun and progressive manner while receiving the essential tools for continuing their exploration of our rich traditions.
To build this sense of community, each month we have an all Hebrew School event where children from every grade are buddied up together. These events reflect our monthly themes such as Thanksgiving or Light or Diaspora Communities. In addition, our synagogue tzedakah box collects money for charities and causes chosen by each Hebrew School class throughout the year.
In our younger grades, children learn their Aleph Bet, letter recognition to linking sounds. They soon progress to reading words, sentences and full paragraphs. Holidays, Torah, Modern Hebrew, prayer, ethics and life-cycle events are also part of our curriculum. Older grades participate in electives as well. Elective offerings over the years have included chorus, dance, cooking, theater and band.
Grades K through 7 meet most Sunday mornings (alternating with Saturday morning “Shabbat Shul” approximately once a month) from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon. Grades 3 through 7 also meet on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.
Pre-schoolers can attend our monthly Tot Shabbat and Library Learning programs. Tot Shabbat is led by Naomi Barell and children's musician and storyteller Matthew. Library Learning is offered in conjunction with the PJ library and is led by our librarian, Ellen Gittlesohn. Families are invited to Friday night Folk Service and potluck dinners as well as our special holiday events.
Naomi Barell serves as Principal of the Hebrew School.
